Growing together - development is influenced by environment

How does the prenatal environment impact our lives?
Barker Hypothesis
Developmental Basis of Adult Disease Prenatal Environment Influences the Development of Adult Onset Diseases
Development of the Intestinal Microbiome--Is it influenced by maternal actions?
As infants, are we what our mother eats? How does gestational environment influence nutrient scavenging in the neonate?
How does adult nutrition alter our risk for disease based on the Barker Hypothesis?
We look at high fat versus low fat diets and health outcomes in mature offspring
About us

We are currently exploring the developmental toxicity of maternal vaping exposure and offspring health outcomes

So far, we have established two cohort with varying nicotine content in commercially available vaping products (Vuse Golden Tobacco 1.8 and 5% nicotine).  We have found impacts on litter size and kidney weights but haven't yet gotten into the molecular pathways for nutrient responses.
Students in the lab--Selma Podbicanin is a 2nd year grad student who has led our exposures to vaping--ask her how many offspring she has weighed and monitored at a time (over 300). She began as an undergrad working on the cigarette smoke exposure project (see below).

Our lab is shared with Dr. Cynthia Corbitt and so we collaborate heavily.

Katelyn Chism won the ULBB undergrad summer research poster contest! So proud of her!
About us

Dr. Stocke studied the impact of maternal cigarette smoke exposure on offspring gut/liver function

Kendall documented alterations in the fed and fasted state SIRT1-FXR pathway gene and protein expression in male and female offspring exposed in utero to cigarette smoke.
Students in the lab--Dr. Kendall Stocke who graduated in Dec 2020. He is now an NRSA fellow at the UofL School of Dentistry.
Megan--Was an undergrad
Currently a grad student at Ohio State
Montana State University Mass Spec Lab
Dr. Neal ran this lab long time ago--LC/MS and GC/MS lab with strong training mission. Occasionally send samples there.
